Heather McPherson (NDP, Edmonton Strathcona) was elected as an MP in 2019 and served in the House of Commons as Deputy House Leader, Critic for International Development, Deputy Critic for Foreign Affairs, and Deputy Critic for Women and Gender Equality. In her first two years as an MP, McPherson worked closely with Indigenous, environmental, and local organizations to counter coal companies’ lobbying efforts and to organize local, provincial, and national resistance to coal mining in the Rocky Mountains. She successfully advocated for federal environmental oversight of all coal projects, spelling the end to the Grassy Mountain coal project. Prior to her election to Parliament, McPherson spent 25 years working around the world in international development with a focus on social justice, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainable development.
