Smith is the outgoing president of the Nanwakolas Council, which represents six of the 26 Great Bear Rainforest First Nations. Smith has shown environmental leadership as:
Committee member of B.C. Premier’s Advisory Committee on the Environment;
Committee member of Coast Sustainability Trust, which aims to mitigate the negative effects of the provincial government’s land use decisions;
An advocate for First Nations’ logging methods, which take greater care of the land and watersheds;
Chairman of the Gilgalis Project, a 2-year Traditional Use Study that involved interviewing elders and hereditary chiefs to inform land use and management programs;
An active volunteer with the Coast Opportunity Fund, which funds various projects to preserve and improve the Great Bear Rainforest, as well as create sustainable community-based employment for First Nations communities.
Smith’s most notable environmental contribution was acting as a key negotiator of the Great Bear Rainforest agreement for 20 years. His knowledge and dedication led to the area’s complete protection from industrial logging.
